Loose Translation

I love this dress. I know I've gushed about it before, but how can I not? It was my mom's. And she used to wear it on sunny summer days when we would go play. And now it is one of my go-to dresses. It's so carefree and casual and has made me love florals on black.

I tried to dress appropriately for the nice weather (that being, mostly clear & 50-something degrees) and then threw on a blazer, since I had a critique in one of my graphic design classes today. I thought i might be under dressed, but then again, there were people in hoodies like any other day.

I love how easily a nice, well-fitting blazer can completely transform a look. And I must also thank my mom for that because I remember back in high school, she stressed the importance of having a nice one. She bought this one for me on sale from Banana Republic (I thought it was still expensive on sale! At that time in my life, I couldn't even imagine wearing such a thing) but now I am so thankful.

Is there any clothing item or style that your parents stressed?

And now I sort of feel bad, because the pigeons were drinking that water and then I chased them. But it was fun at the time and I did not think about that.

dress: hand me down from mom
shirt: American Eagle forever ago
blazer: Banana Republic
belt: thrifted
knee socks: H&M
flats: Urban Outfitters
hairbow: F21

  4. That dress looks wonderful on you! I love articles of clothing that have stories to them. Unfortunately, my mom didn't keep much of her old clothing, but I do sometimes wear my dad's vintage Beach Boys tour tee shirt :)

  7. Whatttttt I love that dressss! I also love floral on black. I feel like it's pretty but also has the potential to look tough. I haven't been able to wear my knee socks yet because it's always too cold. I'm really excited for it though! love the bird pictures. I'm sure they'll find somewhere else to drink and understand that it was for your blog. Then they'll be like "ohhh ight it's cool."

  11. Lea,

Thanks for the lovely comment on my brand-new blog :) I think chairs (or the garage-button, or pigeons) in the photo make for more personality! Love that this dress was your mom's - I got some of my Grandma's jewelry for my birthday & it's my favorite.

And I don't think the pigeons were too annoyed with you chasing them away from the water. :)

My mom always stressed the importance of a the perfect little black dress, and she was right. Having a nice one is so important.

  22. how freaking lucky are you! that's a beautiful dress! aah, when my mom left her country, she left all her belongings with her brothers and of course they lost everything. I tell her that I'm so mad at them in that sense because all of her awesome vintage dresses and blouses would now be mine :( I can only dream. and she never really stressed on a particular item, though now she wants me to wear heels more often and stuff, haha. I'm a flats/sandals girl.

anyway, sorry for the long comment! I finally had a chance to respond to your lovely comment and thank you thank you ♥ your blog is cute! and I am definitely following!

  29. thanks for your comment on my blog! I had the same fears about the yellow, and also haven't had a denim skirt...er..possibly ever! there's just something about them that i never really liked, but a darker wash makes it a lot more chic than lighter denim, i think! It's funny, you get these ideas in your head about certain items of clothing, and it's really hard to push them away!
